Call open until: Monday 18 January, 2010.

Co-hosted by Australia's National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility and the CSIRO Climate Adaptation Flagship, this conference will be one of the first international forums to focus solely on climate impacts and adaptation. It will bring together scientists and decision makers from developed and developing countries to share research approaches, methods and results. It will explore the way forward in a world where impacts are increasingly observable and adaptation actions are increasingly required.

Deadline: 15.02.2010

Spatial Cognition is concerned with the acquisition, organization, utilization, and revision of knowledge about spatial environments, be it real or abstract, human or machine. Spatial Cognition comprises research in very different scientific fields insofar as they are concerned with cognitive agents in spatial environments, such as robotics, artificial intelligence, linguistics, cognitive science, and philosophy. The aim of this research is to help humans to solve spatial tasks and to improve their spatial skills. Research issues in the field range from the investigation of human spatial cognition to mobile robot navigation, including aspects such as wayfinding, spatial planning, spatial learning, representations of space, map comprehension, and communication of spatial information.

* Natural language and space
* Conceptualizations of space
* Representations of spatial knowledge and spatial ontologies
* Spatial and spatio-temporal reasoning
* Cognitive processing of spatial information and spatial attention
# Spatial learning and spatial skills
# Human wayfinding, route directions, and spatial behavior
# Diagrammatic reasoning and maps
# Human-machine interaction in spatial environments
# Spatial assistance systems
# Geographic information systems
# Robot navigation and exploration
# Evaluation and benchmarking of spatial theories and system

Tags: Summer school, climate change, adaptation, mitigation

Deadline: 19.12.09
Costs: 1.200 CHF

The NCCR Climate, Switzerland's centre of excellence in climate and climate impact research, invites young scientists to join leading climate researchers in a scenic southern Swiss Alpine setting for keynote lectures, workshops and poster sessions on the occasion of the 9th NCCR Climate Summer School 2010.
Scope

The topics covered at the NCCR Climate Summer School 2010 will include:

* Emission scenarios and the future of the global climate
* Economics of climate change: an overview
* Assessing costs and benefits of climate change
* Adaptation and Mitigation: instruments, strategic aspects and implementation
* Climate policy and international negotiations

The Summer School invites young researchers from all fields of climate research. The courses cover a broad spectrum of climate and climate impact research issues and foster cross-disciplinary links. Each topic includes keynote plenary lectures and workshops with in-depth discussion in smaller groups. All summer school participants present a poster of their research and there will be ample opportunity for discussion.

The summer school is open to young researchers (PhD students and Post-Docs) worldwide. Participation is highly competitive and will be limited to a maximum of 70. The registration fee (1'200 CHF) includes half board accommodation, excursion and teaching material. A small number of grants will be available for students from developing countries.

9   Link   International Workshop: Social-Ecological Resilience of Cultural Landscapes
Tags: Workshop, social-ecological systems, cultural landscapes

deadline for submission of abstracts is February 28, 2010

The workshop, organized by the Ecosystem Services Research Group at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, aims at enhancing theoretical insights into the social-ecological resilience of cultural landscapes through coming to terms with – and challenging – existing concepts of “driving forces”, “thresholds”, “adaptive cycles” and “adaptive management”. The basis of the workshop will be empirical studies focusing on cultural landscapes as social-ecological systems.

Keynote speakers:

Mauro Agnoletti, University of Florence (Italy)

Carole Crumley, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA) / Stockholm Resilience Centre (Sweden)

Lesley Head, University of Wollongong (Australia)

Ann Kinzig, Arizona State University (USA)

Mats Widgren, Stockholm University (Sweden)

There will be at least one presentation about FCM on this conference ;-)

Ecological economics recognises the interconnections and interdependence of the economic, biophysical and social worlds, and focuses on the human economy both as a social system and a system embodied in the bio-physical universe. Reflecting on the identity of ecological economics, the 9th conference of the European Society will investigate how ecological economics can broaden the available range of methods and tools for policy support, and increase its relevance for the real-world problems.
